Mount Muhabura
Also known as Mount Muhabura, it gets its name from the local Kinyarwanda language meaning “the guide”. The extinct Volcano is located in the Virunga Mountains on the border of Uganda and Rwanda stands at an elevation of 4,127 meters. It’s a day hike with no overnight needed and takes 6-8 hours depending on the fitness level of the hikers.This Volcano can only be hiked from Uganda.
Mount Sabinyo
Also can be spelt as “Sabyinyo” meaning old man’s tooth is a dormant volcono at an elevation of 3,645 meters and can only be hiked from Uganda. However, the volcano lies at the border of all three countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo Democratic Republic and hikers get the chance to be in all 3 countries at ago when they make it to the peak. Depending on the hikers pace, the hike takes about 8 hours and no overnights needed.
Mount Gahinga
Gahinga lies between Muhabura volcano and Sabinyo and it’s the smallest of all the three volcanoes and easily manageable for clients with moderate fitness. It stands at an elevation of 3,474 meters and can also be hiked from Uganda. Gahinga Volcano is extinct as well and is mostly covered with Afro-Montane vegetation. Hikes do not need an overnight, can be hiked in a day taking about 6 hours depending on the clients’ fitness.
Bisoke Volcano
Bisoke Volcano also sometimes spelt as “Visoke” is an extinct volcano and lies on the border of Rwanda and Congo Democratic Republic. The hike takes about 6-8 hours and does not require an overnight. The Volcano hike stands at an elevation 3,711 meters. The Summit of the Volcano has a beautiful crater with a diameter of 400 meters and gather fog but does not snow.
Karisimbi Volcano
Its an inactive volcano on the border between Rwanda and Congo Democratic Republic. The Volcano can be hiked from Rwanda and hikers spend two days on the hike with an overnight on the volcano. It stands at an elevation of 4,507 meters.
Nyiragongo Volcano
Nyiragongo Volcano is an active strato volcano located within Congo Democratic Republic’s Virunga National Park. Clients require and overnight on the top of the volcano and its last eruption was in 2016. The volcano stands at an elevation of 3,470 meters and the lava lake at the top has great views in the morning as you get ready for the descend.
